Peter and Alison answered questions about immigration legislation and the processes involved in drafting such legislation. They discussed the problems that have arisen with a multitude of Immigration Acts, passed at the rate of one every two to three years, amending previous Acts and bringing in new provisions on top of each other.

They expressed the need for consolidation to be followed by simplification and greater clarity and encouraged the government to consult with ILPA at a pre-legislative stage. They advised the government to hold meaningful consultations with interested sectors and for the results of those consultations to be provided to the legislators in both Houses of Parliament in order to assist them in the process.
