The trial in Birmingham of four men charged with Conspiracy to Cause GBH With Intent collapsed today after the prosecution was forced to concede that the fundamental evidence which underpinned their case could not be relied upon.

The four men were alleged to have shot the victim in the leg as ‘punishment’ following a dispute over drugs in August 2018 and the Crown’s case relied primarily upon telephone and CCTV material.

Tom Wainwright on behalf of one of the defendants, having persuaded the court to order that the underlying data be disclosed to the defence, was then able to undermine the accuracy of crucial aspects of the prosecution case such that the Crown were compelled to offer no evidence mid-trial.
