Shelter research into legal gaps exposed by Grenfell fire – call for evidence

5 September 2017

Tessa Buchanan

Housing and homelessness charity, Shelter, has commissioned research on “Identifying and filling the legal gaps exposed by the Grenfell fire”.

The research will be carried out by a team from the Universities of Bristol and Kent. In her capacity as Vice-Chair of the Housing Law Practitioners’ Association, Tessa Buchanan has joined the expert advisory group which will assist with the research. Tessa is a member of the Garden Court Chambers Housing Team.

The objectives of the research are:

  • To set out clearly the gaps in current legislation which may make housing less safe and/or prevent households from remedying problems
  • To set out where lack of enforcement undermines existing legal protections
  • To identify legal remedies to strengthen protection for tenants.

Call for evidence

As part of the research, the team are asking for evidence from housing lawyers and other professionals, as well as renters. They have constructed an online questionnaire which should take no longer than 20-30 minutes to complete.

If you have any queries about the research, please contact a member of the research team: () or ().
