Woman suffering from ‘Battered Person Syndrome’ and post-traumatic stress disorder acquitted of child cruelty

Following a five-week trial at Cambridge Crown Court, on 26 May 2017 Marie Maltby was found not guilty of two counts of child cruelty. Di Middleton QC and Susan Bryant of Garden Court Chambers represented the defendant.

Di Middleton QC and Susan Bryant, instructed by Justine Potter at Sarfo Solicitors, successfully defended Ms Maltby on the basis that she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and ‘Battered Person Syndrome’.

Her co-defendant, Garth Gatland, was convicted of child cruelty and is awaiting sentencing. The case has received national news coverage, including the BBC, ITV and Metro.
