Students accused of obstructing police officers during peaceful protest acquitted

Three students accused of obstructing police officers during a peaceful protest at the University of Sussex have been acquitted. Shahida Begum and Owen Greenhall represented two of the defendants.

The students were arrested after sitting down in front of a police van in an act of symbolic protest at the end of the Sussex University occupation. Two of the defendants, Kristina Ilieva (represented by Owen Greenhall) and Caradog Jones (represented by Shahida Begum), were acquitted following successful submissions of no case to answer. A third defendant was acquitted at the end of the trial.

The case was reported in the local and national media.

Owen Greenhall and Shahida Begum are members of the Garden Court Crime Team. They were instructed by Lydia Dagostino of Kellys Solicitors in Brighton.
