Garden Court Chambers is delighted that Marc Willers has won the prestigious Legal Aid Barrister of the Year 2011 award. The winners were announced last night at the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year (LALY) awards ceremony.

Marc has practised at the Bar for over 20 years, and throughout his career has represented those disadvantaged in society in human rights cases. In recent years he has focused on planning and other cases affecting Gypsies and Travellers. This, his tireless campaigning work for legal reform, and the training he has provided through the Council of Europe was all recognised by the judges.

Over the past year Marc has fought to protect the very fabric of the legal aid system through successfully challenging the decisions of the Legal Services Commission on the awarding of legal aid contracts to solicitors.

One of those practices that Marc brought a successful judicial review for, Community Law Partnership, was a runner up in the Legal Aid Firm award.

The Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards are organised by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group, as a unique celebration of the often unsung work of those in the public and not-for-profit sectors. This was their ninth year and the winners were announced by Doreen Lawrence, campaigner and director of the Stephen Lawrence Trust, and John Howard.
