Judy Khan KC appointed Old Bailey Senior Circuit Judge

The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon has appointed Judy Khan KC to be a Senior Circuit Judge based at Central Criminal Court, with effect from 4 September 2023.

Judy Khan KC will be known as Her Honour Judge Judy Khan KC. She was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1989 and took Silk in 2010. She was appointed as a Recorder in 2007. 

Judy is an experienced criminal defence silk and former Joint Head of Garden Court Chambers. 

Her practice has crossed a spectrum of serious crime cases. Predominantly briefed in murder cases, often involving young defendants.

She spent two years representing a number of families at the Hillsborough Inquests; which included leading a team of barristers who dealt with the medical and pathology evidence. 

She won Crime Silk of the Year at the Chambers Bar Awards 2019.

Judy will be greatly missed by her colleagues at Garden Court Chambers. On hearing of her appointment, one colleague said:

"The authenticity, humility, humour, humanity, hard work and innate sense of justice that we have long witnessed and admired in our Judy will serve her so well on the Bench."

Others described Judy as "irreplaceable" and that "her command and understanding of the law" is "unparalleled".

Stephanie Harrison KC, Joint Head of Garden Court Chambers, stated:

"Needless to say we could not be more proud of all that Judy has achieved in her stellar career as a barrister, we are grateful for her unstinting commitment and service to all at Garden Court Chambers and in particular the Crime Team, and last but not least, how much she will be so much missed as a colleague, friend and all round brilliant woman!"

We wish Judy all the best in her new role, although we will miss her greatly.
