Garden Court Chambers is delighted to announce that our colleague Irena Sabic KC has been appointed by the Lord Chief Justice as a Deputy King’s Bench Master, based at the Royal Courts of Justice.

Described as "a great legal mind” by Chambers & Partners, Irena’s expertise is sought after in individual and policy challenges concerning all areas of public, administrative, environmental and immigration law.

Her multi-disciplinary practice means she regularly conducts test case litigation. She has a particular focus on cases concerning human rights breaches, abuse of state power and treatment of children and vulnerable adults subject to immigration control.

Irena’s versatile practice is rooted in civil liberties and human rights law, with her extensive expertise called upon in cases concerning climate justice, environmental law, unlawful detention, migrants’ rights, welfare support, deportation, and victims of trafficking.

Irena was part of a team of lawyers who won Highly Commended at The Lawyer Awards 2022 for Pro Bono Initiative of the Year. The initiative assisted members of the Afghan judiciary and legal profession to secure UK visas after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021.

Irena is a barrister board member of the Bar Standards Board and is currently Chair of the Health Service Products (Pricing, Cost Control and Information) Appeals Tribunal.

She is public access accredited and welcomes enquiries from members of the public or organisations seeking advice or representation in all areas of specialism.

Her appointment follows an open competition by the Judicial Appointments Commission and will take effect from May 2023 for four-years on renewable terms.

A Master is a judge who deals with all aspects of a claim in the High Court, from its issue until the trial.

Irena Sabic KC will continue to practice at Garden Court Chambers.
