The Strasbourg court has interpreted national security generously to national governments, consistent with its recent decision in Regner v. the Czech Republic [GC], no. 35289/11, 19 September 2017 in four recent cases: Gulamhussein v United Kingdom no. 46538/11 and Tariq v United Kingdom no. 3960/12, Kiani v United Kingdom no. 2428/12 Gulamhussein v United Kingdom no. 18509/13.

Paul Troop appeared for Gulamhussein, Tariq, and Kiani in the European Court and below. He was lead by Hugh Southey QC in Gulamhussein and Kiani. Fraser Whitehead of Slater and Gordon represented Gulamhussein and Tariq. Shazia Khan of Bindmans represented Kiani.
