The Public Inquiry was announced by the Home Secretary on 29th April 2004 following the ruling of the House of Lords in the case of Regina v Secretary of State for the Home Department, ex parte Amin that there should be an independent public inquiry in Zahid's death. He was 19 years old at the time. The Inquiry will commence hearing oral evidence on Thursday 18th November 2004. It has been set up to investigate the events leading up to this young man's murder and will make recommendations about the prevention of such racial attacks in the future.

Dexter will act on behalf of Zahid's family. Solicitors are Imran Khan and Partners, who acted on behalf of Mr and Mrs Lawrence in the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry.
