Garden Court hosted a successful fundraising event to raise money for children in Sri Lanka who have been affected by the tsunami.  The second Tsunami Annual Fundraising reception was organised by the Association of Sri Lankan Lawyers and held at Garden Court on 1st December.   The evening raised £1,500 – part of the way to the fundraising target of £4,000.

The funds provide effective assistance through local organisations that have knowledge and experience. The Appeal has already supported a number of projects including helping the Prithipura Communities, an organisation dedicated to the care and assistance of children with disabilities; the Senthalir project, a children’s home in Udayarkuddu in the North East of Sri Lanka which was destroyed during the tsunami, and the ‘Back to Life’ project in Ahangama which is rebuilding homes for Tsunami victims.

More money is needed to help the following projects which extend beyond children’s care:

  • to support 11 tsunami-affected children until they complete their full time education at St Mary’s in Matara
  • to help the Peraliya Community Centre that is at the heart of one of the worst losses of life when the sea engulfed a train.  The centre is dedicated to providing women with the knowledge, skills and training to be independent and self-employed
  • to support the UK-Sri Lanka Trauma Group – for UK-based Sri Lankan doctors dedicated to helping victims traumatised by the tsunami.
