Jury acquits driver of assault charge after just one hour of deliberations

A driver facing charges of assault by beating and possessing an offensive weapon has been found not guilty. He was represented by Tom Copeland of Garden Court Chambers.

The driver threw a coffee cup out of his car window. A member of the public picked it up, chased his car and confronted him. The driver responded by getting out of his car and fetching a baseball bat from his boot.

The jury did not accept the driver grabbed the man or intended to use the bat to cause injury. He was acquitted of both charges after just one hour of deliberation by the jury.

The driver was represented by Tom Copeland of Garden Court Chambers’ Crime Team, winners of the Legal 500 Crime Set of the Year award 2015. He was instructed by Amy Hooper of Mackenzie & Co Solicitors .
