Deputy Crime Practice Manager

Reporting to: Director of Clerking

Based within: Crime Team

Summary

Garden Court Chambers is a large and dynamic Barristers’ Chambers with a team of staff who provide the clerking, financial, marketing and administrative support for nearly 200 barristers. We are a diverse set, specialising in all aspects of human rights and social welfare law, including crime, family law, housing, immigration, and civil law. We are based in a Grade 1 listed building in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, close to Holborn tube station and a range of shops, bars and restaurants.

We now have a vacancy within the Crime clerking team, for a Deputy Crime Practice Manager.

The post requires good organisational and administrative skills and a good telephone manner. Daily tasks of a Crime Team Senior Assistant/Deputy Practice Manager  at Garden Court Chambers are wide ranging and interesting.  We deal with very high profile cases so confidentiality is imperative within this role.  Computer literacy and accuracy are essential.

SALARY, BENEFITS AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • The salary is up to £35,000, dependant on relevant experience.
  • Hours: 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday.
  • Holidays: 25 days per annum pro rata (plus bank holidays).
  • Interest-free loan for travel card (following successful completion of probation)
  • Pension.

Fees Clerk

Reporting to: Head of Finance (with daily supervision from Head of Revenue Control)

Based within: Revenue Control Team

Summary

Garden Court Chambers is one of the largest and most successful barristers’ chambers in the UK. Following rapid expansion in recent years, we now have over 180 barristers supported by a busy operations team. We are recognised as leaders in criminal defence, civil liberties, housing, immigration, family and public law. Our passion for human rights and social justice has shaped the development of law in these areas over the last 40 years. This is reflected in our ground-breaking cases, which hit the news headlines every week.

We are looking to recruit an experienced Fees Clerk with chambers background to work as a member of the Revenue Control team. This requires a sound knowledge of systems, time recording, WIP, Billing and the Credit Control processes.

The successful candidate will work with the Barristers to implement changes to existing working practices and initiate improvements in the use of the Case Management software, to effectively manage the case inception, time recording and WIP, to encourage prompt billing and improve debt recovery procedures.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Experience of Credit Control functions within barristers chambers
  • Good systems knowledge, especially Case management systems
  • Experience of Time Recording functions
  • Experience of WIP and billing parameters
  • Good understanding of the business processes involved
  • Knowledge of Legal Aid
  • Proactive and willing to take initiative
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Professional attitude with good client relationship building skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Good team player

Desirable:

  • Experience in Credit Control
