Deputy Public Law Practice Manager

Reporting to: Public Law Practice Manager

Garden Court Chambers is a large and dynamic Barristers’ Chambers with a team of staff who provide the clerking, financial, marketing and administrative support for nearly 200 barristers. We are a diverse set, specialising in all aspects of human rights and social welfare law, including crime, family law, housing, immigration, and civil law. We are based in a Grade 1 listed building in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, close to Holborn tube station and a range of shops, bars and restaurants.

We are looking to recruit a Deputy Public Law Practice Manager to join the Public Law team. The public law work covers a broad spectrum of areas from planning and environmental law to immigration detention. Barristers within the team are at the top of their game, dealing with high profile and test cases that change the law and seek to make a difference to our society.

The clerking can be complex but presents a great opportunity to develop your knowledge of different court procedures and develop your practice management skills further. There are also great opportunities to identify and build relationships with key clients and assist the Public Law Practice Manager to grow the team further.

General Duties:

  1. Learning and understanding the experience and capabilities of the Public Law team and its individual members in depth.
  2. Promoting the team and individual team members with professional clients and other organisations to meet the needs of clients and provide optimum customer service.
  3. Case administration including arranging and booking in cases, conferences and meetings, and accurately recording fair allocation of work.
  4. Liaising and communicating with professional clients and courts, maintaining the highest standards of client care.
  5. Primary management of public law team diary and email inbox, ensuring barristers are aware of commitments and undertaking future booking troubleshooting.
  6. Maintaining effective and efficient procedures to manage responsibilities and ensuring compliance with these.
  7. Negotiating fees and finalising funding for cases including those cases funded privately, by legal aid, CFAs and those requiring costs budgeting.
  8. Working collaboratively across teams assisting the Public Law Practice Manager to shape and achieve the objectives of the team business plan.
  9. Attending team meetings and practice management meetings with individual barristers.
  10. Deputising for Public Law Practice Manager and assisting colleagues in other teams when required.
  11. Maintaining and developing skills and abilities at a level commensurate with the seniority and responsibilities of the post through a mix of formal and informal learning and training.

Business Development

You will be joining chambers at an exciting time, working with the team and individual members to develop business and further team objectives through attending events, networking and developing good relationships with solicitors and other contacts, and assisting in developing opportunities and marketing initiatives together with the Public Law Practice Manager.

Business development duties will include:

  1. Handling existing client portfolio and maintaining excellent communication and loyalty.
  2. Assisting the Public Law Practice Manager to source and act on leads in developing new relationships.
  3. Working in collaboration with marketing staff and clerking team to organise campaigns and events.
  4. Attending events to network with contacts and develop business.

Essential   

  1. Clerking, paralegal or equivalent experience gained preferably, but not necessarily in Public Law, including diary management, fees negotiation, confidently liaising with solicitors and court staff.
  2. Calm, patient and flexible approach to work in a very busy environment.
  3. Pro-active and solution orientated approach to working and problem solving.
  4. Written and numerical accuracy, neatness and a methodical approach to work.
  5. Ability to work unsupervised, prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  6. Interested in developing knowledge of public law and increasing current awareness within the legal system.
  7. Experience of standard Windows computer software and preferably diary and case management software.
  8. Experience of building and developing professional relationships with solicitors. (Desirable)

  • This position attracts a salary of circa £35,000 pa, plus a range of staff benefits.
  • Hours: 9.00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday, with one hour for lunch

Revenue Controller/Billing Clerk (Civil and Housing)

We are looking to recruit an experienced billing clerk for Civil and Housing, to work as part of our Revenue Control Team.  In this role, you will be responsible for undertaking accurate and efficient billing for the Civil and Housing Practice Teams, to meet the operational requirements of the Barristers and delivering a high level of customer services at all times.

Duties include:

  • Efficient and accurate billing, maximising claim levels and turnaround times
  • Dealing with queries around claims
  • Appealing assessments and incorrect decisions
  • Advising barristers on the most effective and efficient billing methods
  • Hitting targets set by Head of Finance
  • Identifying areas for continuous improvement in the billing process
  • Supporting the Credit Controller with chasing any overdue payments on an adhoc basis

Person Specification:

Junior Revenue Controller – Family Law 

Reporting to: Head of Finance (with daily supervision from Head of Revenue Control)

Based within: Revenue Control Team

We are looking to recruit a Junior Revenue Controller to work as part of our Revenue Control Team. The ideal candidate should be willing to undertake training to expand their knowledge in billing and credit control.

 Duties include:

  • Liaising with the Legal Aid Agency/Solicitors regarding unpaid FAS cases
  • Contacting solicitors regarding unpaid legal aid cases
  • Liaising with solicitors to obtain correct legal aid details
  • Liaising with solicitors to allocate funds on CCMS for FAS cases
  • Obtain missing documents required by the Family Team’s Revenue Controller to finalise FAS billing processes
  • Assisting the Family Team’s Revenue Controller as necessary

Person Specification:

  • Previous Credit Control, General Accounting or Cashiering experience would be advantageous
  • Good systems knowledge, especially Case management systems
  • Good understanding of the business processes involved
  • Proactive and willing to take initiative
  • Excellent organisation skills

Accounts Clerk 

Reporting to: Head of Finance

Based within: Finance Team

We are looking to recruit an Accounts Clerk to join our busy Finance Team.  In this role you will perform a variety of administrative and related duties within the team.

Duties include:

  • Arranging weekly banking/Payment processing
  • Data entry into data base
  • Purchase ledger Control – in the absence of Accounts Assistant
  • Producing payment on account applications weekly and liaising with solicitors to allocate funds on CCMS where applicable
  • Liaising with solicitors to obtain correct legal aid details
  • Opening post placed in the Finance Team’s pigeon hole daily and dealing with documents as appropriate
  • Keeping filing/scanning up to date and ensuring that files are tidy and accessible
  • Assisting with any other day to day administrative tasks as necessary

Person Specification (Skills and experience required in this post)

  • Experience within an office environment would be advantageous
  • Excellent communication skills
  • IT literate including a good knowledge of Excel
  • Good attention to detail
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to develop new skills
  • A calm, patient approach to work in a very busy environment
