Monifa specialises in family law. She has a busy practice representing clients in public and private law matters, with expertise in care proceedings representing all parties.

Family Law


Monifa is an experienced practitioner in care proceedings, representing all parties including parents, the children's guardian and local authorities. Monifa provides astute and practical advice to lay and professional clients.

Since joining Garden Court Monifa has broadened her practice, working with lay clients from diverse minority backgrounds and with vulnerabilities including learning difficulties and mental health diagnoses. Alongside all respondents in care proceedings, she has run cases on behalf of interveners, grandparents and designated local authorities.

As a practitioner she is known for being thorough in her preparation, producing documents that assist the bench and demonstrating all areas of the case have been considered.

Monifa is familiar with applications for secure orders and adoptions, including applications for leave to oppose.

Monifa has a particular interest in private law cases that involve children with disabilities and special needs, adapting submissions and case law to the particular needs of the family. She has extensive experience in child arrangement order proceedings and injunctions, including final hearings and fact finding hearings.

Outside of children matters, she has experience with contested divorce matters, specifically pertaining to the validity of foreign divorces including Khula' and Talaq.

Monifa also has a written element to her practice having drafted advice in the following areas: enforcement of child arrangements orders; education law; Public Interest Immunity applications; applications to discharge parental responsibility; and the use of the inherent jurisdiction in abduction cases.

Monifa is qualified to take work on a public access basis.

Monifa was instructed by Miles & Partners pro bono for the fourth respondents, Mr and Mrs H in the re-hearing of the appeal A (A Child) [2018] EWCA Civ 220. The child was placed with extended family in Ghana (Mr and Mrs H) under an SGO as opposed to with the UK based foster carer; the placement option supported by the Guardian. The judgment focused on Article 8 identity rights and proportionality when considering a placement outside the natural family.

Due to her background working with individuals lacking capacity Monifa has an interest in cases in the Court of Protection. She is looking forward to growing her practice in this area.

Pro Bono Work

Monifa undertakes pro bono work for Southall Black Sisters and the Bar Pro Bono Unit.

Her recent pro bono cases include a successful discharge of a prohibited steps order, allowing a Mother to visit India with her daughter; and advice on a protracted contact matter with parties across continents.

Monifa would like to expand her practice in the areas of forced marriage, FGM and surrogacy.

Monifa studied law at the University of Kent, where she obtained First Class Honours.
