BackgroundMarguerite is particularly interested in human rights issues and has been interested in developing international practice links in this area. In Canada she was involved in the successful same-sex marriage litigation and has been involved in other litigation regarding women’s rights. She was an invited speaker at a symposium organised for Madame Justice L’Hereux-Dube on her retirement from the Canadian Supreme Court. She has also taught advocacy courses at university level, advised Labour MPs on domestic violence, abortion, embryo experimentation and reproduction technologies. She has given many lectures and seminars on women and surrogacy, crime, abortion and violence against women to such groups as the European Parliament Socialist Group, the LSUC Sexual Orientation Group, the Vancouver Law Union, WindsorUniversity, and the Ottawa Criminal Law Reform Association International Conference Marguerite acted as an international observer for the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues (FIDH) during the 1990 Oka crisis in Canada. She assisted in preparing case summaries for a legal computer database and lectured to the Canadian Bar Association/LSUC Sexual Orientation and Equality Rights. Over the last 15 years she has acted as a leading junior in a large number of cases. Other areas of work include: sex discrimination in employment and elsewhere and civil actions against the police. Marguerite was counsel to the Macdonald inquiry (racism in education). Marguerite is particularly interested in issues concerning expert evidence and human rights issues and has been interested in developing international practice links in this area.
