Elizabeth Veats
Areas of PracticeElizabeth practises exclusively in family law. She has a special interest in mental health issues. Her practice focuses on public law children cases. She also advises on all other areas of family law, including ancillary relief and on claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 and the Mental Health Act 1983. BackgroundElizabeth was always motivated as a student by issues of social justice and this led her to study law at university. It was only when she met Tony Gifford QC (then head of Wellington Street Chambers) at a Radical Lawyers meeting at university that she realised that law could be interesting! She realised that law could be used as a tool for achieving, or at least attempting to achieve, social justice. A stint working for the Greenham Womens' defence team with Elizabeth Woodcraft and Isabella Forshall (both at Wellington Street), really fired her enthusiasm for a career at the Bar. Throughout her career, Elizabeth has remained fiercely committed to representing the more disadvantaged people in society, in all areas in which she practises and, furthermore, to challenging some of the prejudices and conventions that govern people's behaviour. In particular, Elizabeth specialises in representing people with mental health problems. Other activitiesElizabeth runs training courses for MIND, social workers and mental health workers on child protection and mental health issues. She has experience of working as a certified facilitator for the Environment Council. She is a part-time president of the Mental Health Review Tribunal.
