Crime

Anna has a busy and varied criminal defence practice and is regularly instructed in the Crown Court in matters of serious violence, public order, drugs and confiscation proceedings. She also appears regularly in the Court of Appeal. Anna has a special interest in representing young people and those charged with public order offences, particularly those taking part in demonstrations and protests. She has particular expertise in the area of human rights and abuse of process.

Anna believes in a holistic approach to criminal law and has an interest in the broader litigation arising from criminal prosecutions such as prison law, civil actions against police and judicial review.

With a background as an asylum and human rights caseworker for a busy firm of solicitors in Nottingham, Anna has experience and knowledge of immigration law as well as European and International Human Rights Law and uses this to represent individuals facing extradition proceedings and deportation.

Inquests

In 2005, Anna was pro bono junior counsel representing the families of Pte. James Collinson, one of four young people who died at the Deepcut Army Barracks in Surrey. Anna continues to be involved in the campaign for justice for the Deepcut families and has an interest in litigation and inquests arising from Army deaths and deaths in custody.

Training

Anna has lectured on the implementation of ECHR fair trial standards and the right to liberty. In 2006, she was invited by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe to train defence lawyers in Macedonia.

R v Sean Baker (Court of Appeal) - Appeal against sentence of IPP

R v Fagan
(Kingston Crown Court) - defendant acquitted of s.20 GBH against 3 complainants on basis of self-defence.

R v Aaltonen & Ors (Lewes Crown Court) - Protestors against weapons components manufacturers EDO/MBM acquitted of conspiracy to commit criminal damage

R v Marriott & Ors (Brighton Magistrates' Court) - Protestors against weapons components manufacturers EDO/MBM acquitted of s.14 POA following District Judge's on PII.

R v Levin (City of Westminster Magistrates' Court) ¬- Protestors against Erinys International acquitted of Aggravated Trespass following successful legal argument.


Inquests

Junior Counsel for the family of Pte. James Collinson at the inquest touching on his death at the Deepcut Barracks.
Secondment to the Robert Hamill (Northern Ireland) Public Inquiry - Winter 2007

Inquest touching on the death of Lance Corporal Brian Young at Armagh Barracks - Scrutiny of the Army's Policy on alcohol and it's role in the death of a young solider within the barracks.
